Becoming a Member Print this page
Membership in the Sutersville Fire Company is completely voluntary However in order to maintain an effective and efficient organization our membership is governed by rules and regulations that apply to all members.
Membership in a Fire Company is unlike other volunteer organizations or clubs. Here your membership makes you an integral part of a team that is dependant upon each other for our safety. That dependence requires all members who respond to alarms to be well trained.
Active and Junior Membership is open to all residents of our fund drive area (Sutersville Borough and the Sutersville Hill/Gratztown area of Sewickley Township). Applications may be obtained from this site under the "Files" Section. Junior applicants (14-17 yrs) must also complete a parental release form (also available under the "files" section) and obtain working papers from the school district. (for more information on the Junior program download the Junior FF program file).
Those interested in "Active" Membership may obtain an application and submit it along with $5.00 dues (refundable if not accepted) to any member for processing. Once your application is received it will be turned over to an investigating committee who will research your references, past association with other fire companies, and criminal background. The investigating committee will bring your application to the next regular meeting for consideration along with their recommendation based on their investigative findings.
If accepted for membership consideration, you will be voted on as a prospective member for a period of 60 days. This period allows you to become acquainted with the members and the organization. During this time you will be able to see what is involved in being a member of this organization and the current active members will be able to evaluate your suitability for this organization. Also during this period you will be allowed and expected to respond to incidents as an observer, attend training, meetings and fund raising events. At the end of this 60 day period the membership will vote at a regular monthly meeting whether to accept you as a probationary member based on their observations of your performance and suitability or decline your application and refund your dues.
Once you have been voted in as a Probationary member you will be able and expected to participate in emergency operations within the scope of your training and perform all functions and have all rights an privileges of full membership with the exception of being able to vote at elections or hold an office. Probationary membership will last for 10 months not including the first 60 days as a prospective member. Making your total time from application to full membership 12 months.
At the end of your Probationary period you will be voted on for full membership. At this time the body has the option to accept you as a full member, extend your probation, or drop you from the roster. (Typical reasons for rejection for full membership is lack of participation).
This organization is looking for very special people to fill its ranks and become a member of our family. The bonds formed in this organization during times of danger, hardship and tragedy are seldom found elsewhere and forms an extended family structure that will provide a lifetime of memories.
If you think you can meet the challenge and stand beside us as we continually strive for excellence while helping our neighbors in their time of need, Print out an application and hold on tight....Its gonna be a wild ride.
